There are two possible Sarah Ann Ricketts. The one described below, born in 1859, and another baptised in 1863 at Hook Norton, Oxfordshire.

The 1859 one is born more or less in the place that Thomas Higham's wife gives in various censuses. She marries William Keyte and would have been a widow when Thomas marries in 1887. I can not find an obvious candidate for her as Sarah Keyte in either marriages, deaths or censuses after 1881. In the 1891 census, the children of her first marriage are dispersed to various relatives.

The 1863 one is born in the wrong place. Her date of birth matches the gravestone at Morton Pinkney but not her death registration. She would have been a spinster in 1887, but she probably dies in 1876 at Banbury.

The most likely explanation is that the 1887 marriage certificate is wrong and she should have been entered as Sarah Ann Keyte, widow.


She was baptised at home in Wardington on 29th May 1859 and "received into the Church" on 23 Sept 1859. When I enquired as to what this meant, I was told that she would not have been expected to live, therefore her baptism was held at home. As she survived, she was taken to the church for a further ceremony, but not another baptism. This I'm sure explains the mystery of why her birth is not in the index. I suppose they didn't think it necessary to register her, and no one remembered to do so after she survived. Her parents I already had as William and Sarah Martha (nee Cherry).
